Comment on Oil drilled in US coastal waters can be sold to anyone on the world market by Bruce Monger

Hi Ernie – Lots of US commodities besides oil are sold on the world market (e.g., wheat and soybeans). But I think you knew that. What I was trying to do is clarify that when we open oil exploration up in US coastal waters, the oil that comes out of the ground/seafloor is not US oil, but rather becomes the oil of a large multinational corporation (a corporation with no expectation of patriotic duty to benefit any nation, but only a legal requirement to maximize global share holders’ returns. The oil company’s oil then enters the global market and is sold to the highest bidder. I think a majority of Americans don’t realize that oil companies are putting US waters at risk of pollution and then shipping a significant fraction of their oil overseas. You can argue that it creates US jobs and adds positively to the US balance of trade with other countries, but in my opinion these are dirty jobs and they need to be replaced with clean jobs. The world constantly throws out archaic professions and creates modern professions so getting ride of oil jobs is not an outrageous proposition. Finally, I also think that as a US citizen I own the oil that is still in the ground/seafloor and if I don’t want “my” oil taken out of the ground I have a right to insist that it be left in place. And if I get enough US citizens to join me in my desire to leave the oil in the ground/seafloor that is exactly what will happen.

Apparently, selling oil on the world market is the nature of the beast. Is oil the only commodity sold on the world market?

Indeed. 85% of the oil extracted from US territories is sold overseas and they pay no royalties on the leases. They sell the oil overseas so they can get market prices for it. Then they buy oil from overseas and sell it here. That's to justify the price vs. cost to Congress when they come sniffing around. If it were sold in the US, the mark up would be too high and they'd get slammed for gouging consumers.

Definitely interesting stuff. I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens in the future. Someone really just needs to put an international limit on how much you can spend on fish. That's definitely what is driving the problem and it's just ridiculous how much you can spend on a fish.

Hi Carl - Yup.. pretty bad. See, however, the link in Mark's comment above - especially about the 21012 prediction. I doubt 2012 will be end the end, but a decade would not be too far fetched (but still a hunch/guess). See Also the related posts above..

Pretty scary video. I had no idea that the Atlantic stocks were in that bad of shape. Even if the video is slightly exaggerated, it's ridiculous that the European Union actually supports the Bluefin fishery like that. I really hope they aren't right about that 2012 thing. I wonder if the ~5 lb. schoolie sized ones will show up this year by me(south shore of Long Island). 300,000 Euros for a fish too. That's actually pathetic.....

Right on, Bruce. Yeah, that video is pretty great. Word is the author is getting linked up to do more videos in support of better climate change policy. I'm really looking forward to seeing new stuff. Keep up the great posts!

Hi Mark - Your link makes good points and I very much commend you on taking the time to clarify many points - not just with me, but with other blogs as well. It was especially nice that you noted that it's not like the sorry state of the Atlantic Bluefin needs exaggeration. And I do realize that offering up inaccuracies can only lead to openings for opponents to conservation to exploit and call for blanket dismissal of all concerns. I think for now I'll leave the post and video up with the hope that the reader will see your comment and follow your link to get the fuller picture...

On a side note: I went to your blog and saw the "carl sagen never fails" post (http://bit.ly/ghBLVY). I had viewed this video awhile ago and thought it was terrific - seeing it again was just as great! How moving and profound this man was/is!
